The average salesperson has been with SMD for over 7 years and have been selling our select line card for a long time. They know the products better than other distributors because they sell a few commodities from a preferred base of suppliers. Our current line card is about 40 lines and continues to be reduced to specific preferred partners.

We are one of a few of the multi-regional distributors that are ISO Certified and have been for over 6 years. We are constantly improving processes, procedures and overall error rates. We upgraded our software in 2008 to a modern Windows Based custom application designed specifically for electronic component distribution.

What is each of our roles in the market today?
The market and business model for distribution has changed dramatically over the last few years. Engineers now base a large percentage of their design decisions on information gathered from manufacturers web sites and Internet search engines. Distribution’s main role for both the suppliers and customers has become supply-chain management, value-add services, and vendor managed inventory programs. These expectations have been our main focus for over 20 years. We are experts in all forms of electronic communications and understand the importance of intelligent and immediate response.

Why does SMD need the manufacturer’s reps?
7 of our Top 10 customer in North America are located in markets where we currently do not have full time field sales people. The reps call on these accounts, frequently from our suppliers and at the same time representing SMD. In all markets, we partner with reps to call on all of our accounts, work engineering opportunities and build long-term relationships. Sales and Management at SMD visits all of our major accounts but we cannot be there as often. The reps eyes and ears are essential to our success in these accounts.

Does SMD have new business opportunities for the reps?
SMD has become the first choice for some of our suppliers and a number of reps to qualify requests coming in over the web. We make sure we are all working together on only the most desirable opportunities and move others to the appropriate catalog houses and other channels.

SMD is committed to working closely with all OEM and manufacturers representatives, sales and management personnel, in North America. We will share all information directly with any of our business partners. As a multi-regional versus national distributor, our relationships with the reps are very important.
